Tiro Typeworks John Hudson and Wm. Ross Mills Wm. Ross Mills says that he learned type design "by doing it." He and his partner, John Hudson, first "designed with type" before founding Tiro Typeworks as an independent digital type foundry. When asked about his background as a type designer, John Hudson says, "Actually, this question causes some embarrassment. I didn't train anywhere, didn't apprentice with anyone, in fact; I opened Tiro Typeworks with my partner Ross Mills on a bet. Our side of the bet was that we couldn't make a go of it." Hudson lost that bet. Today, Tiro Typeworks is a thriving digital foundry developing exceptionally beautiful typefaces. The company's commitment is to "continue the independent tradition of typography, as it has existed for more than five hundred years, free from the influences of fashion and novelty." Aeneas follows [Manticore] as John Hudson's second release into the Creative Alliance. A titling and display face, Aeneas is a 20th century calligraphic interpretation of classical Roman capitals. "The design," says Hudson, "also owes homage to the German calligraphers Hermann Zapf and Werner Schneider." There are three weights in the Aeneas family: Regular, Light and Dark. Each is enhanced by a set of logotypes, alternate, and swash characters inspired by Renaissance manuscript forms. Used alone, the base fonts have a refined, formal quality. Simply using a few of the alternate characters, however, turns a sophisticated headline into a lively typographic expression. Plantagenet, Mills' first Creative Alliance release and an exclusive design, celebrates the 18th century English type style originated by John Baskerville. Mills, however, added just a hint of French flair to the traditional British letterforms. The result is an elegant, sophisticated typeface with an engaging personality. Added benefits are the open counters and wide characters that also make Plantagenet a highly legible typeface. The exceptional range of weights and widths in the Plantagenet family make it ideal for a wide variety of text and display uses. This family has it all: a full range of normal weights, condensed designs, ligatures, old style figures, small caps, a handsome set of titling capitals, swash letters and even a suite of ornaments.
